Why Your Business Has Followers But No Customers
Why Your Business Has Followers But No Customers
Here’s a conversation we have almost every week:
“We have 15,000 followers on Instagram, but sales are flat.”
It stings to hear, but it needs saying: followers were never the goal. They were supposed to be a means to an end — revenue. Somewhere along the way, “growing the page” became the whole strategy, and a lot of businesses have a healthy-looking social media account attached to a business that isn’t actually growing.
This happens because vanity metrics feel good. Likes are dopamine. Follower counts are a scoreboard you can screenshot. But none of it pays your staff or restocks your shelves.
So what should you actually be tracking?
- Cost per lead — how much are you spending to get one person interested enough to reach out?
- Conversion rate — of the people who do reach out, how many actually buy?
- Customer lifetime value — is your marketing bringing in one-time buyers or repeat customers?
- Return on ad spend — for every naira spent on promotion, how many are coming back?
If you don’t currently know these numbers for your business, that’s not a personal failing — it’s a sign your marketing has been built around visibility instead of results. Most businesses are sold “content and consistency” without ever being shown how that content is supposed to translate into a paying customer.
Here’s the reframe: your marketing should work like a machine with a clear input and output. Content and ads on one end, qualified leads and sales on the other. Everything in between — the platform, the aesthetic, the follower count — is just plumbing. Important, but not the point.
At ICIDAT, when we take on a digital marketing client, the first thing we do isn’t a content calendar. It’s a conversation about what “working” actually means for your business — number of leads, cost per sale, revenue target — and we build backward from there.
Because a beautiful Instagram page that doesn’t sell is just an expensive hobby.
If you can’t tell us what your last campaign actually earned you, let’s fix that first.
